HIStory belongs to TD

I think Michael took a huge risk in releasing the songs he did on HIStory (disc 2) because not only are there probably his most forcefully direct message songs but also some of his most personal ones too. He’s emptying his heart out for all the world to witness and hear (SIM, Childhood) and despite these feelings of his, he also thinks about others, namely “You Are Not Alone” - which is probably the only song on that whole album that has some measure of comfort and peace. I think “Smile” is a pep talk he’s giving himself. I also think that “Come Together” is out of place on here. I’ll have to read Joe’s book to help me with that one. If he mentions it specifically that is.

His vulnerability is endearing and heartbreaking. If the events of 1993 had never happened, we wouldn't have seen what the depth of hurt and pain that he experienced looked like in a person so gentle and kind and loving. That he shared that with us, it really exposed himself and opened himself up for more ridicule, but I love that he did it anyway. That was a courageous and bold move to take. I hope it was truly cathartic for him. I think he also released those personal songs too so they could be used as teachable messages.

There’s really nothing else comforting or inspirational in the album apart from YANA, Smile & History (to a certain degree). Everything else stirs you up, riles you up, makes you angry, makes you cry, makes you react and then, in my experience, makes you want to act. This album feeds my humanity and keeps me focused. Yano, I still cant listen to “Little Susie”. The music and lyrics still freak me out!! *grins*
